SHC Board Tackles Accessibility and Development Issues in Savai’i, Includes Key Board Meeting
The Samoa Housing Corporation (SHC) Board of Directors undertook a critical visit to Savai’i on Thursday, 28 November 2024, to address pressing concerns related to the Corporation’s office in Salelologa and the undeveloped leasehold land situated behind the Salelologa Market. This visit also included a pivotal Board meeting held in Savai’i to ensure comprehensive discussions on these issues.
Addressing Safety and Accessibility at the Salelologa Office
The SHC’s Savaii Office, which has been operational since 2007, is located on the top floor of the Salelologa Market. However, the current location has raised significant safety and accessibility concerns. The office’s setup does not comply with Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards, posing risks to both staff and clients.
Accessibility is another major challenge, as the office’s second-floor location makes it particularly difficult for elderly individuals and people with disabilities to access SHC services. These issues hinder SHC’s ability to deliver equitable and efficient services, directly impacting the well-being of its clients and staff.
Plans for Development on Leasehold Land
The Board also focused on SHC’s undeveloped half-acre leasehold land, strategically located behind the Salelologa Market. Despite holding the lease for eight years, the site remains vacant. The Ministry of Lands and Survey has urged SHC to expedite development, citing its alignment with the Government’s vision for Salelologa Township as a central economic hub for Savai’i.
To address these challenges, the Board underscored two immediate priorities:
- Enhancing Safety and Accessibility at the Current Office
The Board is actively exploring solutions to ensure compliance with OSH standards, improve safety, and enhance accessibility for all clients, particularly the elderly and individuals with disabilities.
- Developing a Purpose-Built Facility on the Leasehold Land
Plans are being reviewed for the construction of a dedicated SHC facility on the leased land. This development aims to provide a modern, safe, and accessible environment for SHC operations, supporting both corporate efficiency and the Government’s long-term goals for Salelologa Township.
SHC Board Meeting in Savai’i
During their visit, the SHC Board convened for an official meeting in Savai’i, reinforcing their commitment to addressing these critical issues. The meeting served as a platform to discuss strategic initiatives, align on immediate actions, and finalise timelines for the proposed developments.
Commitment to Community and National Development
The SHC Board reaffirmed the Corporation’s dedication to providing a safe, accessible, and efficient environment for its staff and clients. By prioritizing these developments, SHC not only addresses community needs but also contributes to the growth of Savai’i through strategic investments in infrastructure and service delivery.
This initiative underscores SHC’s proactive approach to aligning with national development priorities while enhancing its ability to serve the people of Samoa.
